A wide-ranging elections measure spearheaded by Democrats passed through the Colorado House Friday on a party-line vote with staunch opposition from Republicans.
At its core, the measure would send mail ballots to every eligible voter, allow Election Day registration and put all the counties on a real-time statewide database that supporters say would weed out those who try to vote twice.
Eight states from Maine to Wyoming and the District of Columbia currently allow same day registration.
Republicans have assailed the so-called Voter Access and Modernized Elections Act as a partisan effort that lacks insights from the state’s top elections chief, Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler. But Democrats counter by saying bipartisanship is evident as Republican and Democratic clerks from around the state support the bill.
Many of the bill’s provisions are set to be implemented by this November’s off year election.
The bill now moves on to the Senate where Democrats hold a 20-15 majority.
